Admission Procedure

The merchant navy education has been centralized in India and the admission procedures are now under the purview of the Indian Maritime University. At Avighna Maritime Academy, the admission procedure is as follows:

1. Initial Screening

The interested candidates will undergo initial screening for admission. At this stage our admission counsellor will evaluate the candidate based on the eligibility criteria as defined DG Shipping, Govt. of India. You will be asked questions about your educational qualification, age, etc. The counsellor will guide you about merchant navy and career options in merchant navy. To continue with admission procedure, candidate has to do his enrolment by filling and submitting application form fee of INR 500 in favour of “Avighna Maritime Academy”

2. Test & Interview

The candidates who are applying for Diploma / Degree courses of merchant navy shall appear for a written test and an interview. The written test shall be comprises ofObjective type multiple choice paper to assess the subject knowledge of the candidate and Subjective type paper to assess the English language skills of the Candidate. The purpose of the interview is to assess the adaptability of the candidate to marine life.

3. Counselling

The short-listed candidates will be called for counselling and the Admission Officer will guide you about the pre-sea and post-sea training that you qualify for.

4. Medical Examination

Short-listed candidates are required to undergo a medical examination as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000; as amended from D.G. Shippingapproved doctor.

5. Admission Confirmation

The candidates who clear their medical examination will be issued an admission confirmation letter after submission of the admission fee. The balance of the course fee can be paid in instalments on the prescribed dates.

Entry to different programmes leading to a career in merchant navy is also done on the basis of entrance exams. However, there are other procedures for different entry levels.

1. Admission through Entrance Exams and Merit:

If you want to apply for technical courses for entering Merchant Navy, then you will have to appear for entrance exams. IMU CET Exams are conducted for admission to marine engineering programmes after class 12. However, few colleges take students on the basis of marks secured in class 12.

2. Sponsorship Based Entry:

Entry is also possible if you apply to either of the popular maritime institutes for maritime programmes. You can apply for sponsorships at the institutes started by shipping companies to train potential candidates for the merchant navy. The sponsorship to go on a ship will be provided to you by the company through which you apply only if you have completed a course at their institute.

3. Lateral Entry (LE) into 2nd year of Marine Engineering:

Direct Admission can also be taken into the second year of marine engineering programmes approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. There are two ways of securing LE seats in Marine Engineering programmes:

1. After completing the first year of engineering from electrical or mechanical branch with minimum 60% and
2. Pursuing a diploma in electrical, mechanical, marine or ship-building engineering with minimum 60% aggregate marks
